Téo Cabanel - Oha

Oha from the venerable house of Téo Cabanel is an old school styled chypre. Oha is created by the house nose or Téo Cabanel, Jean-Francois Latty, a skilful perfumer when it comes to fragrances in the the high quality classic style of Téo Cabanel. I have tested a recent sample and an older one with juice from a bottle of the old design.

Oha starts grandly with a slight powdry and bitter bergamot with contrasting accords of different roses, I can image both pink and red roses. When Oha reaches its middlenotes the roses is still dominating but has deepened and has become darker and tarter. Jasmine and iris is supporting in a robust classic flowery accord with some cool spicyness from the cardamom. There is very little sweetness, if none in Oha, even the musky base is woody and dry powdery, the vanilla and tonka are barely detectable but I suspect these notes prevent Oha from being too austere. Even if lacking oakmoss which seems to have be replaced with musk and woods, Oha is old school chypre-ish in style, something that fails most modern fragrances in this genre.  Ohas lack of sweetness and robust chypre character makes it to an unusual fragrance.

Comparing the two samples of Oha, despite just  the older one is more classic, deeper, boozier and less musky powdery with slightly better longevity. The current sample is more musky powdery, a bit sweeter in the roses and reminds me especially in the opening of Narcisco Rodriguez for Her Edt. Oha is said to be an evening scent but I think it's also appropriate for formal daytime wear as it is close to skin. Longevity is good, ca 12h.

Those who like fragrances in the style of Sisley Soir de Lune, Estee Lauder Knowing, the original Agent Provocateur, Niki de Saint Phalle, but also a bit more spicy blends as Chanel Coco, will probably also appreciate Oha.

Grossmith - Amelia

Amelia, a part of the Grossmith Black Label Collection released in late 2012, is created in honour of the daughter of the founder of the house (originally established in 1835), Amelia. The fragrance is created by Trevor Nicholl.

Amelia starts with an accord reminding of an upscale version of Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely and Narciso Rodriguez For Her Edt. Amelia than proceed less musky and sweet than the two other mentioned, there are offsetting neroli, white flowery and green notes detectable which balances the fragrance in a delicate way. I also smell a small fraction of that special tart note which is present in many 2012 cretations, probably compliant with the coming regulations. I like this kind of dry tartness combined in one note, the tart note is more clearly presant in for example Chanel 1932. 
The star of the flowery accord is a fresh and dewy peony, a peony that manage to maintain this impression during the whole dry down and doesn't get sour and dull. The base is musky with a counterbalancing typical contemporary chypre accord containing patchouli and vetiver. In the latest stages of the development of the base, the notes seems similar to the baseaccod in Golden Chypre which was reviewed last week. As in all Black Label creation tested so far the notes are well balanced and seamlessy mixed.

Amelia is a perfect fragrance for spring. It is clean without any laudery- or ozonic notes. It fits into most environments and couldn't offend anyone, hence it's the perfect, feminine scent for work. To be a tribute to a woman of the 19th centurary, Amelia feels a bit too contemporary in style. Maybe it is also a bit too perfect, there are absolutely no dangers lurking in the background as in for example the NR For Her Edt mentioned above. Amelia wears close to the skin and the longevity is for a day. The quality is top-notch as with Grossmiths in general.

Those who like fragrances in the classical style of Annick Goutal Quel Amour and Parfums de Nicolaï Rose Pivoine will probably appreciate this modern, musky interpretation of the peony-theme.

Mysk(o) vecka...

Under en arbetsvecka har jag provat myskdominerade dofter i den lättare, ljusa till mellanljusa kategorin. Alltså inte tyngre bygder som min mörka amberettebaserade myskolja eller herr Parfumistas Oud Musk. Nedan några korta, spontana kommentarer.

Provningen inleddes med:

Les Nombres d'Or Musc (Mona di Orio): Som Mona O-fantast blev jag förstås förtjust i denna även om den inte når upp till Cuir i samma serie. Pudrig och varm mysk, troligen på grund av heliotropen och tonkabönan, elegant damig (på gränsen till tant enligt herr P), inget kemiskt tonårskatigt. En lätt blommighet av angelica och lite ros och neroli. En lätt floriental klassad som unisex men enligt min mening är den mer feminin och kan klassas som damdoft (om man nu bryr sig om sådant).

...och följdes av:

Musc Nomade (Annick Goutal): Påminner en hel del om Monas mysk men den här är helt unisex i sin karaktär. Träigare, mörkare och kallare trots vissa gemensamma ingredienser förutom ljus mysk extraherad från angelicarot, även amberette frön, tonka böna och labandum. Blommorna saknas här och doften känns kargare än Monas mysk på något vis.

Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT (NR): En tillbakahållet blommig mysk som ger mig associationen varm bilklädesel i konstläder i en gammal amerikanare. En modern, träig, myskig oriental som inte skäms över sin kemiskhet. Det finns en lätt fruktig blommighet av osmanthus och apelsinblomma som balanserar mysken på ett bra sätt. Doften var stilbildande när den kom och den har fått flera efterföljare, mest känd är kanske Sarah Jessica Parkers Lovely som är en mer blommig variant.

Helmut Lang Woman EDP (HL): En mycket bra skalad ljus mysk som också var avantgarde när den kom 2000. Inleds med tillbakahållna vita blommor som jasmin och konvalj över en myskigt, träig bas kombinerad med en tydlig, varm vanilj. Diskret doft om den appliceras i lagom mängd. En perfekt svart/grå kostym/dräkt doft.

...och avslutades med...

Musc Samarkand (Les Nereides): Den ljusaste mysken sist. Den ger en fräsch men inte tonårskladdig känsla. På mig påminner den mig väldigt mycket om min version av Miss Dior EDT (ca tio år gammal version) även om den senare är grönare, stramare och skapare. När jag känner likheten förstår jag hur mycket Miss Dior förvanskats, en massa ljus mysk in och det mesta av ekmossan ut, även om jag tycker mycket om min version i alla fall. Där Miss Dior är effektivt kontorselegant är Musc Samarkand en vit, mjuk och ullig angorajumper att krypa in i en mulen dag. Jag tycker mycket om denna rena, enkla och okomplicerade doft. Svalkar även bra på sommaren.

Summering av den mysk(o) veckan: Mysk har fått en dålig klang på grund av alla likartat kemiskt fruktigt alternativt träigt myskiga dofter som vräks ut på marknaden. Men det finns många fina myskdominerade dofter och ser man till att applicera dem i lagom dos och ge dem tid för utvärdering så hittar man pärlor.
